Some people say Buddhism is an atheistic religion. Is it true?

This clip attempts to discuss this topic on the concept of God in Buddhism. Ven. Dr. H. Gunaratana and Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda gives concise but accurate explanation into this contentious issue.

This video production attempts to discuss various questions that Buddhists and non-Buddhists ask about the Teachings of the Enlightened One and how to practise these teachings in the modern world.

Although Buddhism is the religion of nearly one fifth of the world's population, there are many misunderstandings about its Doctrine and Practice. The most Venerable Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera together with Ven. Dr, H. Gunaratana, Ven. K. Wimalajothi and Ven. Wimala answered various questions put to them by a panel of well-known Buddhist leaders.

  • In contrast, the advaita position on sattva is trikAla-abAdhyatva- svarUpa, ie. sattva consists in not being sublatable at any time. In any cognition such as "san.h ghaTaH", "the pot is", ( or "san.h paTaH", "the cloth is") the advaitin holds that what is being cognized is Existence (sat) with a super-imposed relation of identity (tAdAtmya) between Existence and the pot (ghaTa).

  • In the Buddhist system, existence is defined as arthakriyAkAritva or arthakriyAshakti, the capacity to produce effects. A pot exists simply because it produces some effects, such as cognition, in us and its surroundings. However, in this system, this arthakriyAshakti is universally concomitant with momentariness which means that everything that exists is only momentary.

There is no 'Brahman' or 'eternal god' in Buddhism.

You have wrong view and need to find another teacher

  • @MrGunwitch there is many that buddha mentioned as union with brahma, or in other words , when he refer to the one who achieve liberation like nibbana, but I do agree that the concept of both union with brahman or brahman are different from hinduism, because hindu believe in three gods form brahman and others

I so sorry if I insult arjarn brahm, I just want to explain he did not understand what is buddhism

he dismissed by his temple in Thailand, so thats why he now in australia I think

  • @dhammaraja

There has been a difference of opinion recently due to the fact that Ajahn Brahm has ordained Bhikkunis. It seems obvious to most educated people that the misogynistic culture in Thailand frowns upon women having equal opportunities in the sangha, nevertheless, this is what the Buddha established so the Ajahn is merely serving the true word of the Buddha.

I have lived in Thailand for many years, and there is a strong level of superstition in Thailand

  • @dhammmaraja

I would think twice before slandering Ariya, the kamma consequences will not go well for you friend. Despite my personal opinions on any monk or nun, I would never dare to call them words such as 'ignorant'. It shows complete lack of respect for the robes.

In addition, he did not move to Australia because he was kicked out of the sangha, he was sent to Australia by Ajahn Chah 28 years ago to start a new monastery and never left

Union with Brahman sounds like a Hindu concept. Can you give me some references from the suttas to read about this? Its certainly not the way that I have looked at nibbana.

  • So, if one sees DIVINE LIGHT, and hears DIVINE SOUND (AUM), and feels DIVINE LOVE, one might ask.."Where does the LIGHT, SOUND and LOVE come from?..a DIVINE SOURCE?..a CREATOR...GOD?! As with SOUL, where do SOULs come from? It's been obvious to me, that GOD created the HEAVENS and Earths, as a training ground for SOULs, little minature versions of ITSELF, to learn and grow up in. I've recalled being a primative man throwing stone spears at mastedons. I've come a long way since then..you too..

  • Many of these questions can be solved by personal experiment rather than debate other people's beliefs. If one were to recall a succession of past lives, they would see how they have learned and EVOLVED, as the Buddha described. He recalled as far back, as being a fish, turtle, bird..eventually human. From primative man, to modern man to "Buddha Man". So, one asks, 'What keeps coming back to expand, learn and grow..SOUL?! One can see then, that this is a well-run training academy for SOUL.

  • @MrGunwitch and the really laughing thing that after they study buddhism in Thailand later they want to change it as they like!!!!!

the good example exactly like ignorant western athiest monk ajahn brahm, who criticize Thai buddhist for being "superstitious"!!!! then from where he learn buddhsim, isn't from Thailand!!!!!

and later he want to change the hierarchy of buddhism in Thailand, until he kicked out of Thailand by his temple, as result, he now live in australia
