Istanbul's 400-year old Sultan Ahmed Mosque, otherwise known as the Blue Mosque for its blue-tiled interior, is one of only two mosques in Turkey that has six minarets. Before the public address system was introduced, muezzin, or prayer-callers, would climb their narrow spiral staircases five times a day to announce the call to prayer. But when Charles Annenberg Weingarten tries to replicate their ascent, he has an unexpected encounter in the dark stairway. Distributed by TubeMogul.

  • @MrNMT69 Haha..You make me laugh!

Do you really think the ottomans would copy your crappy church!

They actually improved the church's design and architecture by building the Blue Mosque!

And in my opinion the Blue Mosque seems more superior than the Hagia Sophia!

  • At first I was like no way but the vantage point you get once you reach the top make it worth it.

  • @Matroos0611 Exactly, thank you for understanding my friend. You've explained it wonderfully.

  • @GudMuzlim786

The Islamic architecht where always superior to the ''western'' architecht building systems. Even today the world stil uses the Islamic way of architect and building systems. In the days that the Muslims had Beatifull Mosques with running whater, the Crusaders in England and France had cold castles with no running whater and no highley sufisticated systems of building.

Excuse me for my broken English lol

  • @GudMuzlim786 I am a Turk and it s correct. Ottomans copied high sophia, even they compete with it to make he dome bigger

  • keep on barking you Turkish haters

  • @GudMuzlim786 ok,then we agree that it's not a crappy church,as you said.surely,as people use to say,the original is always better.i say that in a good way.imagine now,in 2012 the turks to built a better and bigger mosque than blue mosque.is there any chance of you thinking the new building is better than the blue mosque?of course not.both buildings are spectacular, magnificant, unique.we are too hamble to judge them.

    turk yunan arkadas

  • @maouro85 Yes I understand what you're trying to say, but the truth is that the Hagia Sophia gave the turks an idea when they conquered Contantinople. And like I said before, they improved the design of the Hagia Sophia in a better, extraordinary form. The result is The Blue Mosque. It is only gives a slight resemblance of a Byzantine church e.g. design of the domes. I did mention before that the Hagia Sophia may have a larger dome but people will look at a buildings shape, quality and design!

  • @GudMuzlim786 well my friend,i love istanbul and turkish people,i really do.i visited istanbul and its sightseeings twice.let's get real here,Hagia Sofia is something unique and the Blue Mosque, which is fascinating too,is something that looks a lot like the church Byzantins built years earlier.

these words come from an arcadas

  • @sazji Don't get me wrong, I don't hate all churches!

But in fact I personally think that the ones in Spain are tremendous only because they were built by the muslims themselves when they were under Christian rule! The muslims were known as Mudéjar and their architecture was Moorish, which is one of the best architecture in Islam that even the Christians copied! The Christians named it Neo-Moorish or Moorish Revival architecture! Truly, the Churches in Spain are the Best of all Churches!
