French set new rail speed record;TGV 574 KM/H April 3rd 2007

A French high-speed train (TGV) has smashed the world record for a train on conventional rails by a big margin, reaching 574.8km/h (356mph).

@cs021093 What do you expect....trains at speed of 300-400 ?? Is it possible at a place where thousands cross rails every hour and many die boz of this....or many poor, who just can afford rail will be able to travel in such trains...it won't happen in years...

@bodhiganguly Still not as fast. The reason high speed trains work in the EU is cause, for the most part, everything is centralized. That's why you see lots of Amtrak in the east and not out west, because for the most part, everyone is going to the same area. And your fossil fuel thing is invalid, Electricity isn't run on unicorn farts, you have to burn FOSSIL FUELS to make it. Therefore your argument over the burning of fossil fuels is irrelevant.

@SPARKY53100 I was thinking the same thing. That's a great engineering accomplishment but what if some terrorist decided to put a iron spike on the track at that speed I would think the train would derail with ease.

@aggiespilot at 574 Kph we are almost at 75% of jet liner speed (700 kph) , plus you add the security check and baggage check and driving to and from airport this train will be faster, Say in France Paris to Marseilles in this train would take 1.5 hrs a flight would take the same time, but the real advantage is planes cannot run on electricity they have to burn fossil fuels and pollute the environment.
