@MuchachoGazbacho Although I get what you're saying. Illadelph Halflife was a street conscious album that people expect to hear from an underground group. But it's been 17 years since they started up, it's natural that the group pursued a more mature sound by incorporating another style.
I wouldn't want these 40 year old guys to be rapping about the same things they did when they were 20. They aged their music along with their fans, allowing them to keep the fans from day 1 & draw in new ones.

@MuchachoGazbacho So Game Theory wasn't a straight hip-hop album to you? I mean there was a lot of production on it, but I don't think it really fell under R&B and Soul. Plus The Roots just evolve their style and sound on each new album and that's the thing that attracts a lot of their fans.
The 2 albums following Illadelph Halflife were the ones that helped them take off. They just would've been another (great) rap group without albums like Phrenology that incorporated jazz into the mix.

so good. shoutout to the 10deep jacket
I would pay more money to see the Roots and Big KRIT perform in a venue like this than I would to see Kanye and Jay-Z in a big packed arena. This is the kind of music that's best when experienced live.
