There are two very different perspectives that parents can have when it comes to raising an autistic child. You can focus on the difficulties and struggles, live each day like it's a battle against autism, and not accept your child for all they are. Or, you can embrace your child--autism and all--with unconditional love. I think we owe it to our children to choose to be positive.

I feel strongly that only showing the meltdowns, the issues, all that negativity...is not only wrong, but will have a dire effect on our children as they become adults. Who will want to reach out to our children when they are adults? If their perception of autism is that of someone who really isn't quite a person? How will autistics ever be accepted in society, when parents are bemoaning Autism everyday?

My child is here with me, with a soul, a heart, and an amazing mind. I celebrate her life everyday.

What will your perspective be?

  • @turtlenurse If it helps I have Autism as well, and I am a HF.

I started to talk at age 7, and I was put down as a IQ of 54. So basically retarded, and yes I had a really hard childhood.

However at age 12 a government I.Q. test showed me with a I.Q. of 147.

Ended up going to government school of science and mathematics in the USA, which is in the top 5 best high schools of the country.

Now I am 21 years old, and in college.

I am still bad with people, but I do have a close friend.

  • I could not agree more with u my best friend has autism and I wish more people could see this video :)

  • @texastardis no cure and no acceptance.

    We are Human 2.0

    We are Auti-Sapiëns

    We are Legion.

    We have the power.

  • I'm an autistic woman and I just wanted to let you know that hearing more parents embracing neurodiversity makes me far less afraid for the fate of younger autistic people. Thank you, and your daughter is adorable. Also, I do a similar happy dance to that.

  • Where did you find the definition at 1:39? I LOVE IT!!!

  • @RBASSMD8 as a parent with a HF boy, I worry that he'll be able to "fit in" as he gets older. I love hearing stories like yours, it puts my worries at ease.....THANKS!!!!

  • I completely share your perspective!!!! Great video! Awareness and acceptance is the key!! My boy has ASD and despite the ups and downs, I wouldn't change a thing about him!!!! He has taught us to appreciate the small things in life....he truly is a blessing.

  • My two year old is smiley and happy but he shows lots of signs of autism, im really confused because some people say that children who have autism cannot smile and give eye contact and then others say they know children who give eye contact and smile who are on the spectrum. Its so hard, watching your child, knowing theres is something wrong and not knowing what it is. x
