Focus on chord tones for a more melodic solo. Start with a basic framework and build up from there, so it could be from beginner to advanced lesson depending on how far you take it!

  • so lets say im improvising... there's chord of Gmaj7 for 8 measures, as long as i ONLY play the notes in that chord, im fine, it should sound good? do i HAVE to start on the root note of G as well? I'm confused :(

  • @i0nPuNk182 you could play all chord tones at first and you'd be fine. but to spice things up you target chord tones on strong beats (which are 1 & 3 in 4/4 time) and add other non-chord tones to approach each chord tone. This is challenging so you could just learn some cool riffs that sound good over Gmaj7 or whatever chord.

  • how do you know if a chord progression is in the same key?

  • @deceased94 if you know the chords in each key and common chord progressions you will know if they are in the same key. So write out the chords in each key like in key of C major you have C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim, C. So if you see C F G chord progression you'd recognize it from key of C.

  • what makes the 3rd the most characteristic tone? instead of the root or the 5th?

  • good question! the 3rd determines the quality of the chord, whether it is major or minor (ie if it's a major or minor 3rd interval).

also when you play the root you get the 5th as a partial overtone, so it's already in the root note in a sense - this is an explanation requiring some knowledge of physics, etc. :)

  • keep up the music!!!!! man nice vids, very nice to watch

  • @wkriski oh i see what you mean, thanks! im also trying to practice on switching chords like from Gmaj7 to F7, it's challenging for me but i think ill get it... thanks again!

  • Grab a guitar and play the three notes, the kinds of riffs you can make are generally defined by where you play the third more than the root note and the fifth note. Music is interpreted but I do agree with wriski, in general the third tone is most characteristic.

  • ah ok! That makes sense. And yes, I learned a bit about overtones in a previous music course I took. Thanks!
