Correct pronunciation? Sort of. It is Spanish pronunciation. In actual rodeos, many Mexicans were cowboys in the American west; and of course much of California was populated by Mexicans before it was a state. Not unusual to pronounce it either way.
Ever notice Caucasian newscasters say the word Nicaragua? They almost always say it as if they were native Spanish speakers. Don't know why some people will say just 1 word with the accent of another language, but many people do.
