Heard yet another common misconception about horse behaviour, from a rodeo lover. It is considered normal for a horse to gape his mouth. It means they are happy! Horses run with their mouths open all the time! Broncs ALWAYS have their mouths open when bucking (a clear sign of stress/fear/overwork). Some DVM's even say this., "If your horse is panting or open mouth breathing, you need to try to cool him down and contact your veterinarian immediately." Funny, huh?Funny Peculiar, not Funny hah-hah.

This isnt cruel! National Western Stock Show is not cruel. The flank strap actually helps the horse buck. Maybe you should read up on what goes on in bronc riding.
