  • Brings back brilliant memeories, I was there for this event and it was one of the best things I've done In the time I've served. Bloody hard work as well.

  • @bighands69 fair doos fair doos

There is no one definition of the term marine.

Some were sailors some were just soldiers.

Even within British Maritime history there roles were varied as it depended on recruitment and command structures. Some were better trained than others.

Fighting seamen can be tracked as far back as the roman empire and even their roles varied.

  • @bighands69 well, Sea Soldiers pretty much covers it! Ive read several sources that confirms that they were only for fighting and emergency "all hands to the pump" , ive been checking them since I read this.

  • @IRememberTheOldDays

Marine is a general term that is applied.

Some navy's marines have different tasks and different training. Some were trained sailors and some were just basic soldiers.

The only constant feature of a marine is that they are soldiers of the marine world.

  • @bighands69 I think Im right in saying that marines did not actually have any sea training. They all lived below decks and were used for beachings and taking ships.

  • @surroundedbysound

Actually marines are considered historically as a fighting soldier of the sea. They are not considered to be basic class sailors even though many were trained as a sailor.

  • Anyone know if I can get a copy of the '72 RT? My dad did it that year and i'd like to see it.

  • Fan-bloody-tastic! Miss the Royal Tournament, great memories watching it

  • @patw59 Because they are part of the Royal Navy but not Sailors. Both the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy come under the authority of the Admiralty and not what in the past would have been the War Office.
