In Accra, Ghana President Obama lays out his vision for human rights and democracy in Africas future. He describes what Americas role in promoting better governance in Africa will be. The speech is entitled, "A New Moment of Promise."

These are some of the things President Obama said:
It is an honor for me to be in Accra & to speak to the representatives of the people of Ghana. I am proud that this is my first visit to sub-Saharan Africa as President of the US.
The 21st century will be shaped by what happens not just in Rome or Moscow or Washington, but by what happens in Accra as well.
I will focus on four areas that are critical to the future of Africa and the entire developing world: democracy; opportunity; health; and the peaceful resolution of conflict.
Governments that respect the will of their own people are more prosperous, more stable, and more successful than governments that do not.
With better governance, I have no doubt that Africa holds the promise of a broader base for prosperity.
People must make responsible choices that prevent the spread of disease promoting public health in their communities and countries.
America will support these efforts through a comprehensive, global health strategy.
Africas diversity should be a source of strength, not a cause for division
We must stand up to inhumanity in our midst. It is never justifiable to target innocents in the name of ideology.
I am speaking to the young people. You have the power to hold your leaders accountable, and to build institutions that serve the people.
I can promise you this: America will be with you. As a partner. As a friend. Freedom is your inheritance. Now, it is your responsibility to build upon freedoms foundation.

  • God bless Ghana my motherland and Prez Obama

  • Great speech. I'm waiting for another truly remarkable communication from him, like in his 2004 Nomination speech at the DNC.

  • Thank you President Obama , thanks for the olive branch and the inspiring words of hope and direction . Those with ears ,can hear you loud and clear . Old school have a hard time taking their heads out of the past .

  • The truth is (i think) that Obama has enormous work to do for his own country and the only thing he can do for Africa in this moment is to send messages of hope and encourage (also economicaly) african countries to find democracy. He has to solve some of U.S.A problems first and i say "some" because he won't solve the most of U.S.A problems in his presidency i think. BUT IF THE UNITED STATES WILL CHANGE THE WORLD WILL CHANGE A LOT TOO

  • i use to like obama but after this speech he resembles a joke...ghana?? you have to be kidding me, they are the true reasons why slavery even started in the first place...thats probably why ghana and the US are such perfect allies...the most powerful countries are the ones who oppose any western diplomacy...this is a joke....somalia is most powerful country in africa despiste their tribal conflicts...they stand and fall alone with no help....ghana is a sell out just like iraq.

  • O was not telling Afr to be self-reliant but rather he was talking down about corruption without blaming first world resource rapers("blood diamonds",tungsten,tantalum,land--see pygmy and Maasai relocations) for bribery and CIA assassinations, as if backward primitivity and not colonialist bribes hinders democracy and development and tends toward corruption. Insulting!

  • O repped AFRICOM as security for loans for ag tech(genmod seeds, fertilizer, herbicide) done as globalist cash-crop mono-crop dependency which is neo-neo-colonialism. Farmers stop feeding nearby village when taking loans for genmod herbicide-resistant seeds, cash crops do not pay, they can't feed their families or the village, they kill themselves. US midwest farmers buy life insurance before killing themselves, then their families can eat for one more year!

  • i agree wholeheartedly africa needs self governance!!! europe and the west does not want this because of the power people of colour would wield... it's the same true and tested divide and conquer shit... barack did not come with hand outs, he told them that they had what people wanted as far as resources were concerned and they should (to make it simple) manage themselves honestly...

  • Read between the line, he spoke well about a particular agenda that's not so beneficial to Africa AGAIN!

  • His Offer is a bit vague. I hope he's not trying to sell Africa another dream, because we will be fools to fall for the same trip again. He ask that we govern ourselves economically, in this case, we will have to create one government for the continent under our own constitution based on our own laws and armies and scientist like Timbuktu, we need leaders leaders in Africa to stop doing backdoor deals with Europeans Natural Resource blood suckin' people.

  • well spoken my brother...

  • sadly i agree
