    I watched this live on TV in The Netherlands and I was crying at the end!. An interesting incident was that Haitink, who was in conflict with the orchestra direction and would leave, dramatically dropped his stick after the end, before the applause came. You can hear the noise of the stick falling!

    Nobody knows if it was intentional, but it was a beautiful ending of nearly 30 years of being the chief conductor!

  • Bernard Haitink is not a conductor obsessed with the glamour and jet-set image that afflict some conductors, past and present (i won't name them) but underlying that self-effacing demeanour is a musician of the highest order. I first heard this piece on vinyl (Phillips label ) 30 years ago with these same forces and was completely bowled over. Thank you laphrovulin for this post.
