Our pond has frozen over.
There are fifteen fish in it.
They are:-
1 x 3" Sarasa Comet
1 x 4" Sarasa Comet
1 x 3" Yellow Comet
4 x 3" Golden orfe
2 x 3" Shubunkins
2 x 3" Ghost koi
2 x 5" Silver Koi
1 x 6" Koi
Yamabuki Ogon (YA-MA-BOO-KEY-OH-GONE) - A metallic gold, single coloured Koi.
1 x 7" Koi
Gin Rin Kohaku (GIN-RIN-CO-HAKU) - A white Koi having a red pattern and whose scales are of a pearl silver reflective appearance.
We have seen the two largest fish under the ice.
We are looking forward to spring and summer when we can enjoy the pond and continue doing the garden.
Please feel free to leave comments and questions.
UPDATE:-
The fish started to hand feed in the summer. It was all going well until we had a visit from a heron that killed one of the orfe and scared the others (Lucky to only lose one fish as they usually have the lot).
We have a fence around it now!

  • @bigyuchan The main things to do are- Never let it freeze over completely, if it has put a pan with hot water on top of the ice to make a hole (a small hole will do) to allow toxic gases to leave the pond. DON'T BREAK OR BANG THE ICE it will stress the fish and may damage your pond. If there is a pump or air stone in the pond raise off the bottom (about 1/2 way) and turn them down (not off). Give me more info and I may be able to give more advise eg:- Pond size. Fish type and size. Filter type

  • Water is green at the moment.

I'm trying to sort this out first.

I have made a large gravel filter with water cress in.

All fish survived the extreme winter.

We have added two more Koi.

    Thanks for the reminder BigggRoss.
