Kate performs "Them Heavy People" on the 1979 Christmas special.

Lyrics:

Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.

They arrived at an inconvenient time.
I was hiding in a room in my mind.
They made me look at myself. I saw it well.
I'd shut the people out of my life.

So now I take the opportunities:
Wonderful teachers ready to teach me.
I must work on my mind. For now I realise:
Everyone of us has a heaven inside.

Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
Them heavy people help me.
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.

They open doorways that I thought were shut for good.
They read me Gurdjieff and Jesu.
They build up my body, break me emotionally.
It's nearly killing me, but what a lovely feeling!

I love the whirling of the dervishes.
I love the beauty of rare innocence.
You don't need no crystal ball,
Don't fall for a magic wand.
We humans got it all, we perform the miracles.

Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
Them heavy people help me.
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball...

  • Why did she lip sync? From watching her other live performances, she had a beautiful natural singing voice.

  • @TheEpicMusicChannel She was lip syncing because of her dancing. It would have been impossible or at least very hard for her to dance and hold a microphone at the same time. And the microphone she used on the tour wasn't reliable enough. And anyway, this was a TV show, not a concert. Back then, most TV shows were lip synced, especially in Europe. And most people didn't care if it was live or not.

  • I watch this and other songs from this show like 10th time, and am still wondering, if this is lip-synced or is there any chance this has been actually recorded live, eg. using a boom. You can actually see the shadow of a boom around 1:00, so it's theoretically possible, but I think when she starts moving like at 3:25, the boom operator would be unable to capture her voice at a constant level. Plus, when the performers start hitting each other with chairs, etc., you would hear it...

  • @0raj11 No, this is lip-synced. All the "piano" songs were live, but all the pther songs were lip-synced.

  • Lovely performance and great quality picture too

  • Thank you!

  • She was/is one of a kind - I remember watching this when it 1st aired, and I had never seen anyone do a performance of this kind - except in musical theatre and performance art.

It seems as if a lot of wildly creative people were signed by the major labels back in the 70s who would *never* get notice today ... she would be an indie act if she were a new artist now.

  • great voice...what a catchy tune

  • She's my absolute favourite singer. <3

  • Did anyone notice she was doing the zombie walk, three years before MJ? If anyone has posted this already, my apologies.

  • I'm going through a really hard time in my life right now, a lot of really severe depression, uncertainty if I should even go on living. I got into listening to Kate Bush recently and great music like this is the only thing really helping me to hold on. I simply can't give up now after hearing her music. It's really saved my life, I wish I could thank her in person somehow.

  • Been too long since i enjoyed kate bush.

    Problem solved,thx S.O.F.
