Four score and thirty years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new tax, conceived in desperation, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are fair game.
Now we are engaged in a great battle, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on Form 1040. We have come to dedicate a portion of our money, as a final resting place for those who would waste it so that some politicians might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not cheat -- we can not evade-- we can not avoid this tax. The brave taxpayers, living and dead, who deducted here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or subtract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we deducted here, but IRS cannot report what we report here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who claimed here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is for us to be dedicated to the great task remaining -- that from the few remaining writeoffs we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last l measure of devotion -- that we highly resolve that these taxpayers shall not have deducted in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that taxation of the people, by the Congress and for the IRS shall not perish from the earth.
