We have to make something like this every week on the masters course I'm doing. I'm using Unity 3D which is a browser-based real-time 3D engine. You can explore this scene from inside your web browser by going to my site at http://www.marunchak.co.uk/unity/temple

You might need to download the Unity 3D plugin, if so you'll be prompted. If you feel uneasy about it, visit unity3d.com , you'll see that it's an extremely well respected engine now.

The statue is a human model from turbosquid, I just changed the pose, nothing complex there. The scene was made and lightmapped using the light-up plugin for sketchup which you can get at www.light-up.co.uk

The textures are from www.cgtextures.com

I originally used face gen to capture my face, it came out with good results. The problem was that in turning it to a statue, I lost a lot of definition from the textures. To that end I decided to keep the original turbosquid model and just rough it up a bit.

  • unity is NOT browser-based! the fact that the games it produces can be played through the UnityWebPlayer is a feature that cam in the late versions of unity. a programing tool that is browser based is php or javascript because they relay on the browser to work. unity is for making 3d video games and not browser based applications. it's a big diffrence.

  • @TheOriginalVZdemon

I understand you in terms of academia but the content itself is indeed browser-based when it is published to that medium. It's a simple description, accurate to boot. The ability of the engine to publish content to the browser is its main selling point.

  • This is Unity Pro I take it, not Unity Basic correct? The shadow effects seem to be something out of the pro version.

  • @10chadjordan01

I made this before shadows were ever added in any sort of usable capacity to Unity. These are not real-time shadows they are lightmapped using a plugin for sketchup called light-up.

I've used vray in the past but it takes a very long time to get the results you expect from the price tag.

  • @VirtualAutonomy well in unity 3.xx and up u can use beast lighmapping within unity

  • @mjkiskingful

And a very good addition it is :]

  • How long does it take for you to make a scene like this? I am intrerested in the video game industry.

Why do you call yourself a hack? I'm self taught as well. My masters is just so I can obtain a piece of paper telling people that my work is endorsed by an educational establishment. :]

I've never attended classes on this subject though I give them.
