On November 30, 2011 the Varian 800 MHz NMR spectrometer at NMRFAM spontaneously (read: randomly) quenched. What you are witnessing is large amounts of liquid helium vented out as gaseous helium. Let's just say this wasn't cheap.
Sadly, due to the unexpected nature of this quench I don't have the initial explosion. But the really fun aspect of this quench is that it happened during a tour for first year biochemistry graduate students!
