The P-3 Orion has been in service for over 45 years. The needle like structure in the tail is a Magnetic Anomoly Detector used to detect submerge subs. The plane also can carry Standoff Harpoon Anti-ship missiles and bombs, but is mostly used for patrolling our coast lines these days. It even is used in interdiction of drug smugglers.

  • Awesome! My dad flew radar operator out of Brunswick with VP-44.

  • COOL! I've been seeing them over Portland lately too.

  • ya his account name is pitchlock

  • Thats awesome...next year I'll give you the camcorder, if you can sneak it on board :)

  • Cool vid, call sign 773. Is that a 162*** bird? Kicking ass at 350 knots! I was in VP-8 from '87 to '91, we had mostly 161s in Kef in '89. But we looked good on the flightline, only 159342 was out of place. She was our "projects" bird lol!

  • You were in Keflavik? I can find out more about this P-3 if you like.

  • I was an AW2 in VP-44 at NAS Brunswick from 1969-72. We rotated through Sigonella and Bermuda. I still get a thrill watching P3s from Whitby Island do touch and goes at the airport here in Eugene, OR. I can still recognize that sound 40 years later!

  • I ejoyed working on those birds when I was there form "79-81" with VP-26.

  • @BHSHISTORIAN : we were the Golden Pelicans in Brunswick back in 1989-1991.

Love the P-3's. They will always be my favorite!

  • i was there!!!

  • Dan-O, I do believe this is a 161 buno but a production UIII retrofit to AIP rather than the UII/II.5 we had in Brunswick in the mid-80's to early 90's.

  • HOOYAH! My son is in VP-45. Jax. AWO2.

  • My dad used to fly P3b's. I feel nostalgic. Legendary plane.

  • Man i remember VP-26, my dad was in the squad as a parachute rigger. Kinda depressing that they closed it down :(
