Bob describes the realistic, practical therapy the Buddha outlines in the Four Noble Truths; and how peace is obtained by conquering the true enemy, one's habitual self. Recorded at Menla Mountain Retreat Center, October 2006.
This makes such common sense. One hurts oneself every time the desire to hurt another is allowed. The trick that seems hard to do is turn the negative energy into a loving energy.
Ok, now in a society, it seems the necessary effeciency to keep the whole thing rolling, restricts personal freedom, so we must check our actions and instincts, because if we all go around hurting each other, we waist energies against each other, which is contrary to the idea of society, to use combined energies to be cohisive and aid the strength and security of the larger "being", society. But...! The world seems to come from this primitive instinctual state, and to my knowledge...
See, I don't get the practicality of this... ok, we devolup anger from a primitive mechanism, which unchecked, will eather kill the, (or is designed to), the thing that hurt, or cause it to check its own behavior out of fear, so it will not further hurt... this is a dumb mechanism, as obviously hitting a tree after walking into it, will do neither of these things, but the primitive mechanism is sufficient for dealing with very simple environmental circumstance...
