IT Service Management: Reducing Cost through Virtualization

Len Sanatalucia from Vicom Infinity Solutions, Premier IBM Business Partner, talks about cost reduction and virtualization using System z and Linux.

Transcript: Well, today, a lot of the customers are expressing their need for reducing costs, streamlining their environments, making them less complex, reducing their[onscreen text: Reducing costs of] facility cost, reducing their people[onscreen text: management] cost, trying to reduce their software [onscreen text: software] cost, trying to reduce their hardware [onscreen text: hardware] cost, their floor space, power cooling those kinds of things, and the issue with that is that they are finding that what is helping them reach that goal as they learn what the new capabilities are of the System z mainframe, is its new virtualization capabilities for allowing them to run lots and lots of virtual Linux systems on the System z.
One of the financial firms here in New York used to tell me until he put the System z in with virtualized Linux servers, that he had no room in that data center to even plug in a toaster. There was no more power, there was no more room for cooling devices, refrigeration, air conditioning units, and there was no more room physically to place servers on the floor anymore. So he decided to put a System z in with zVM [onscreen text: Virtualization supports consolidaton] and Linux virtual servers, and he was able to pretty much clean up the entire floor. You were looking at in a range of probably 2500, 2800 servers, physical hardware servers, now being done all virtually on basically one System z10.
