  • @fmrelay -- Thx for the info! I didn't know the b/ground of the song. Bagpipes and Kuwaiti sands seemed like a funny cultural mix! But I like the song; it sounds cool.

  • The Sands Of Kuwait was a pipe tune composed following the Gulf War 1991 By LCpl Gordon MacKenzie, to commemorate the involvement of the 1st Battalion Queen's Own Highlanders(Seaforth & Camerons), in the conflict.

The Tune was written whilst LCpl Mackenzie was attending his Pipe Majors Course at the Army School Of Piping in Edinburgh Castle, from September 1990 until April 1991.

  • I served with the 1st Bn Queens Own Highlanders (Seaforth & Camerons) in the first gulf war. This beautiful lament is a fitting tribute to the brave young men lost in action there. May God bless them all.

  • Chill out guys. Yes, Remembrance Day is for the war dead in Commonwealth countries, including Canada -- observed on 11/11, originally (and still in much of the world) called Armistice Day. I'm in the US, where we call 11/11 Veterans' Day, with a separate Memorial Day in late May specifically for those who died. The Sands of Kuwait was written by a (then) student at the army piping school in Edinburgh, in honor of the 1st Battalion Queen's Own Highlanders who fought in the 1991 war.
