He could yeah. However if he stays upright and does a straight arm lock, he hasn't commited his body to either side and has a lot more options if something backfires.

I have black belts in a couple of different styles, however BJJ is only a portion of our main style (more stand up based) so while i can move and do a few things on the ground, i'm in no way shape or form experienced. Watching these videos (which are awesome btw) both makes me excited about BJJ, and freaks the shit out of me haha. So much to learn o_0
