Film director Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland this weekend after a statutory rape charge to which he pleaded guilty to more than 30 years ago. Polanski faced jail time for the crime, but he fled the U.S. before his sentencing. Does his arrest surprise you? Should Polanski be extradited and serve his sentence at this point? Polanski spent part of his childhood in Poland and France. Both countries are expected to make an appeal to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the release of the filmmaker. Should Clinton get involved in this matter?

  • What if the guy was a 76 year old plumber with a lifetime's excellent body of work behind him -- fittings, drains, repairs; all top notch, all a credit to his tradesmanship -- and he had done and been convicted of the same thing?

Would he be treated differently? I expect so.

Just because Polanski is famous and an elite artist in his field does not exempt him from the rules that the rest of society has to follow.

Polanski drugged and rape a 13 year old girl. It's time he faced the music.

  • I guess money excuses rape now too, huh?

It's disturbing to me how many people in that video, male and female, willing to excuse the admitted drugging, vaginal and anal raping of a child. There's no forgiving a conviction because of time. 90 year old Nazi war criminals are not forgiven years later, nor should they be. Mr. Polanski is a pedophile and rapist and should be treated like any other pedophile and rapist is.

  • you should know.you can run,but you can`t hide.

    Yours truly, AH

  • He ran away as his trial was not a fair one, even Mrs. Geimer said so herself...

He should have a trial, but a fair one... but that is not possible because he is famous and people want to see someone burn - and this time it is a Jew again named Roman Polanski!

  • The ideal cellmate for Polanski would be Henry Kissinger a war criminal who in 1970 initiated the illegal bombing of Cambodia resulting in at least 600,000 civilian deaths at least one of which was a 13 year old girl.

Except that Henry enjoys complete immunity from prosecution in the US where he has been allowed to evade justice as long as Polanski has and where he is celebrated, fawned over, admired and consulted on news/talk shows and in the corridors of wealth, power, and academia.

  • I'm very liberal and I do not support Roman. Although I do love his movies (Rosemary's Baby is one of my favorites) I don't see how his celebrity would matter. If it were an average American being charged with a crime and then flees for 30 years then gets arrested again, hell yeah he should do the time. He RAPED a 13 year old girl! and then RAN AWAY!

  • er... no, you obviously haven't been paying attention. I am not advocating that she can or should be able to drop the charges, I fully agree that it is a crime against the state, these are simply facts -she did do this. What I'm doing is presenting the evidence that she did express that the continuing publicity of this case has had a hugely negative affect on her life. This has only been exacerbated by his remaining a fugitive all these years and is something else that should count against him.

  • Hey dumbell... rape is considered a crime against the State so A VICTIM CANNOT DROP THE CHARGES. In addition dumbo, the man had already plead guilty and fled before his sentencing. Perhaps you don't realize that the moment a plea is entered or a verdict is read NO MATTER WHAT THE CRIME a victim can't just step in and say I want it reversed. Using your dumbell logic any victim could ask that their perpetrator be released from prison whenever they felt like it. What an idiot.

  • "Celebrities can buy justice and the rest of us can't" How hypocritical. No...what the rest of us do is empty out their pockets BECAUSE THEY ARE CELEBRITIES. Samantha Geimer went for a big chunk of change with R. P. and got it. Is the average rape victim able to be set for life because of being raped? If you want justice equal with the celebrities then quit jumping on them for their millions, just as that kid did with M. J.

  • Hm, I do actually know what I'm talking about; "Samantha Geimer filed to have the charges against Polanski dismissed from court, saying that decades of publicity as well as the prosecutor's focus on lurid details continues to traumatize her and her family."

It seems to me you're more interested in this apoplectic partisan polemic than condemning Polanski, so let's just agree to disgree.
