This video explains my observations regarding the setup of the GY-401 with subtrims. I was told that to get all the performance from the 401, subtrims should be used to set up for stable hover in rate mode after setting the slider for center shaft to get full deflection without binding in either direction.

I flicked into HH, powered the heli on, and the 401 moves the slider to where I just previously set the trim. Moving the rudder stick to the left and right, I'm observing FULL movement of the slider right up to the point I set with the limit pot dial on the 401. I can hover in HH and flip to rate mode mid-flight and retain a perfect hover with full pitch available in both modes.

This video was initially intended to prove a point on HeliFreak.com but it seems that people are actually learning from the video. While this was not intended to be instructional, I'm glad you guys are benefiting from watching the video. Since so many of you are having so much success, I though it only fair to post the link to where I learned this trick: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=552714

  • Hey aren't you supposed to mechanically set up the tail linkage by screwing in the linkage instead of using sub trim? I've always heard gyros don't like sub trim. ILTSYC

  • @kdm0129 I set up mechanically on ALL other gyros. The problem with the 401 is you can't! If you set the 401 up mechanically, you limit the amount of pitch the tail has in one direction because you can't control the pitch endpoints individually. Try my method - it works. Futaba still uses it today to trim the new CGY 750 flybarless gyro!

  • OMFG! it does work!!!!

Had lots of problems with my gyro and this finally solved it!

    Thanks a lot!

  • @kulotskee Awesome!! Glad it worked for you!!!

  • I tried this out, and it worked on my clone 401 anyway. This is not readily available information... I wonder why?? I have read so many posts on forums on how to set up these gyros and how to remove drift etc... not once have I read this method. Now I think of it, I did a similar thing with my GP750 gyro, I had it setup ok, then I added sub trim to set it up in rate mode but it remembered the end points (set separately) which I found curious at the time. Same theory I guess... Thanks again mate

  • @obsequeiousphil Yeah - this setup isn't really necessary for gyros that support dual endpoints. For those, I just set up rate mode neutral hover point mechanically, then adjust the endpoints when the mechanical trim is perfect. Happy flying!

  • GY 401 IS THE BEST GYRO I HAVE NEVER LOST THE TAIL AND THE EASIEST GYRO ON SETUP !!!!! BEST REGARDS FROM GREECE

  • Im going to try this out now and lets see if it'll work on mine

  • Im going to try this now and hope it works on mine too

  • @obsequeiousphil Yes - that exactly what I think it does. The same sub trim setting apples to both rate and HH modes.
