Aue! Te kuaretanga!....if you can't stomach challenge from peoples for whom these are more then mere cultural trinkets; regardless of the fact it is a money making exercise, then don't post material on a public forum. The whole point of 'comment' is to do so. What I have offered is entirely constructive ...PCC is run as a profit making business to internationals. That you perform this take off is not the point. Is it the best that it could be done according to the Caretakers????
Aue! More heat in this set of replies than hot rocks on the hangi e hoa ma. If you can't take challenge from Aoteroa check your intentions. Anyone can mimic ...look at Obama. Read the signage it says; "Boat Show PCC" luau ...the key word is 'show'.
What a lot of heat for something that is 'authentic' kare. Regardless of what internationals claim; with or without a Maori advisor, you do no whakapapa to these Traditions and at best you are mimicking something for which your performance reflects a shallow understanding. Anyone can be trained to mimic. Being Religious doesn't create any immunity from challenging this practice. If you are serious come here and do it in Rotorua and see what happens.
And as for kaumatua, nothing is done at the centre without their guidance, for it is a place of learning and respect for difference in culture, we learn to appreciate not condem and put down- criticise yes, but do it constructively.
Yes the profits from the late night Luau's are returning to Aotearoa in the form of highly sought after qualified personnel who return from BYU-Hawaii and the greater USA with tertiary qualifications, not forgetting completely debt free as well, something that Helen Clark or John Key and his goons are too stingy to ever consider!
No your assumption is wrong because your expatriots (luau performaers) come from your own back yard, good old Aotearoa, and as for the representation of maoritanga, take it up with Uncle Tommy Taurima, he taught us, and he did a bloody good job of teaching non-maori to respect and understand maoritanga!
Koutou ma, its' America land of fake everything? Hello? However, when the sisters and brothers need to turn that tourism round to make a living, you gotta give it to them, people there are not looking for 'authentic' something. They (the average tourist) wants to live out their voyeuristic "I came, I saw, I conquered" fantasy. Only thing missing is Mr Rourke and Tatoo e karanga mai ana 'da plane, da plane' Aue tau kuri e! Just smile, he he he aue hi!
