By 850, most of the philosophical and scientific works of Aristotle; much of Plato and Pythagorean school; and the major works of Greek astronomy, mathematics and medicine such as the Almagest of Ptolemy, the Elements of Euclid, and the works of Hippocrates and Galen, were all rendered into Arabic. Furthermore, important works of astronomy, mathematics and medicine were translated from Pahlavi and Sanskrit. For the next 700 years, Arabic became the most important scientific language of the world and the repository of much of the wisdom and the sciences of antiquity.

The achievement of scholars working in the Islamic tradition went far beyond translation and preservation of ancient learning. These scholars built upon the ancient heritage with their own scientific advances. These advancements were a direct cause of the Renaissance in Europe.

Muslims excelled in art, architecture, astronomy, geography, history, language, literature, medicine, mathematics, and physics. Many crucial systems such as algebra, the Arabic numerals, and the very concept of zero (vital to the advancement of mathematics), were formulated by Muslim scholars and shared with medieval Europe. Muslims invented sophisticated instruments that made future European voyages of discovery possible: the astrolabe, the quadrant, and detailed navigational maps and charts.

  • Billy: The Swiss had Churches long before the invading heathen Saracens were flung from France and then the Iberian Peninsula. The Churches are needed as a bulwark against this new heathen invasion. The Swiss wisely do not want the cancer spreading in Europe to ensnare their land.

  • The Swiss already have strict zoning laws for all types of building. The Swiss like the Alps the way they are now; they don't want architecture that doesn't reflect Swiss culture

Tourism is big business in Switzerland.

Oil-rich sheiks and globalists like to visit Switzerland because it is very clean and "unspoiled"....unlike most cities in the Middle-East and in the industrialized world

Swiss Muslims comprise less than 5% of the population. Why should they dictate the landscape?

  • wtf has islam's contributions to science and literature to do with this? and you fail to mention the rejection of scientific pursuit that started way back from al ghazali on.

  • @TerrierToughGuy I live in Austria and they are taking over. If we don't kick them out, Europe will become entirely Muslim given enough time. However, if they do that, then they violate the rules of freedom. So, right now no one knows what to do, but if we don't do something the Nazis will 100% certain become more popular, take control and well, we all know what happened last time... Its not a pretty picture.

  • Hmm, well every city in the world has a building commision which must approve that a bulding fits into the culture. This law in Switzerland is just saying that the Mosque architecture does not fit into Swiss culture and they have that right.

  • If they expel all Muslims from Europe I am moving there because America is starting to really suck under the liberals.

  • @nishap25 I agree that multiculturalism has failed. The solution is freedom, and freedom means less welfare and more private charity. This would reduce the immigration of Muslims. I agree with you that mosque and burqua bans are wrong, but for different a reason: they violate liberty and property rights. What do you think that Europe should do about the Muslim problem?

  • @freesk8

I am atheist too btw. multicultaralism has completely failed in europe. Read up on situation in europe btw- its very interesting. Honestly, I dont agree with what europe is doing- burqa ban in france and etc- because I think this will make the radical muslims more angry. But europe has to do something to stop all the radicalization. This minaret ban is partly because of muslims(the moderate ones should have spoken up more) and politicians.
