Documenting the Berlin Philharmonic's tour of Asia, including their first performance in China since 1979, Thomas Grubes fascinating film offers privileged access to one of the worlds premiere orchestras.

More than a mere travelogue, TRIP TO ASIA: QUEST FOR HARMONY is an exploration of what it is like to be a member of a world class orchestra, from the point of view of seasoned veterans, probationers and, leading them all, Sir Simon Rattle. The fragility of egos, the pain of insecurity and the nervousness of awaiting acceptance are balanced against the thrill of being a part of history and the rare opportunity of transcending the performing environment and achieving a moment of grace through music.

An insightful, honest and thrilling documentary, TRIP TO ASIA is a celebration of music and the musicians who perform it.

  • and that's what i'm saying, i just find the trailer to this film kind of cheesy, as if it's a VH1 reality show!

  • economics plays a major part...opening up a recording market in mainland Asia is going to become even more important for orchestra musicians in Europe and the US...just look at the move the LA Philharmonic made in appointing Dudamel, you can't tell me the prospect of opening a potentially profitable recording market in Venezuela wasn't a BIG factor in his appointment, no matter if he is Karajan or not.

  • i m sorry i dont understand ...why on a trip like that you realise who you are and you bilieve to your self ??? what that has to do with asia ???

  • @RedSoxWSAgain If its of any help, the only recognizable piece of music in the entire video ( including the last 40 seconds ) seems to be Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss.

  • does anyone know what piece is being played in the last like 40 seconds of the video?

  • @kentusmaximus even if they did it doesn't mean they will be playing there permanently

  • I wonder if anyone slept their way into a position with the Berlin Philharmonic?

  • I really enjoyed this film (watched at the Vancouver Film Festival). This project has brought light to the mystery behind closed doors. Danke! Looking forward to a sequel.

As for those who may think and stray far far away from "classical music" and the conservation of culture takes money.

Yes it does takes money, it also takes much effort and an open mind to accept ones culture/s.

One of the concept of this film is how two very distinct cultures coming together with a common love.... for music.

  • To conserve culture you need money!
