I was actually on tour in Germany playing in a lot of Irish Pubs. Most of my audiences were Irish or English abroad and that's where this song comes from. I wrote the song in DADGAD to give it a Celtic flavour. Special thanks to Laura und Paul for this lovely picture portrait of this song and for being our exiles in this video. I hope you like the song!

Exiles

He gets up in the morning, starts the day off slow,
drinks a cup of coffee and then it's time to go.
He goes to work and through the day
he's busy with his hands,
to earn the extra bit it takes to go out on the town.

He's an exile though he lives in a city,
he's somewhere in the crowd.
A refugee from some kind of damage,
he's a refugee alright.
He's a refugee, he tries not to show it
but all his dreams are sand.
A refugee who can console him?
He reminds me of the song,
they call the "Rio Grande":

Sometimes, he remembers her arms
and sometimes he remembers her charms.
She was the only place that's warm.

She comes home in the evening,
she worked the whole day through.
Came to Germany last year, just like me and you.
It took a little time to settle down it's true.
It took al little time to start a live so new.

She's an exile though she lives in a city,
she's somewhere in the crowd.
A refugee from some kind of damage,
she's a refugee alright.
She's a refugee she tries not to show it
but all her dreams are sand.
A refugee, who can console her?
She reminds me of the song
they call the "Rio Grande":

And sometimes, she remembers his arms
and sometimes she remembers his charms.
He was the only place that's warm.

  • Wonderful original song, Jim! I tried to write a piece with DADGAD tuning a month ago, but didn't do well, so had to give up on it. But listening to this song gives me some hope. :)

Perhaps I should try again. It's a pure joy listening to your performance. Thank you!

  • You hit a nerve there, Jim.

    First: I love Ireland :-D

Second: I love if one can play DADGAD that well.
