A quickly edited proof-of-concept video for the 'Bellydance Unbound' DVD that will be going into production next year. This was shot on Sat. Oct. 30, 2010.

This proof-of-concept allowed myself, the cinematographer and the talent to see which ideas and techniques would or would not work during the actual shoot for the project. So, it is merely a rough draft what the final product may actually look like.

It also affords those interested in backing the project as well as those that are merely curious a glimpse of what we are trying to accomplish with the project.

  • While striking and demonstrative of great skill and general dance technique, I'm not sure I would classify this as bellydance. Experimental and (post-)modern dance, informed by bellydance technique, perhaps. But not much evidence of pure or traditional technique. Artistic envelopes are meant to be broken, but once one does, one shouldn't continue to claim the name of the envelope.

Yes, the style is rather different than what most people typically expect to see when the word 'bellydance' is mentioned. But the dancer, does tribal and dark fusion bellydance (as do all of the other dancers involved in this project) which typically incorporates other styles of dance into it. Jodi adds a bit of modern and butoh to her bellydance performances. She is possibly going to have the piece that is furthest removed from what you would expect from bellydance.
