  • Nigel Richard made a set of Border pipes for me (mid 1990's) pitched in the key of A with 3 keys giving b, E and F. This is the set I played on the Grand Concert of Piping CD. The B set is a wild solo instrument and the chanter has great response enabling really fast fingerwork; it requires work to keep good intonation and tuning. The A set is perfect for playing with other instruments particularly fiddle and allows almost chromatic scale and ability to play tunes beyond the normal 9 note range.

  • Jimmy was one of the few people who had a set of working border pipes in 1980. The bag and bellows I got from Dave Burleigh in Longframlington. My inspiration to get a set was after hearing Rab Wallace playing at Newcastleton Folk festival and also seeing Jimmy Anderson playing a set of small pipes at Linlithgow Folk Club in the late 1970's.

  • Just to put the record straight, the set of pipes I am playing on this video was assembled by me around about 1981. The chanter is a half size Highland chanter that was made for me by Bob Hardie. I modified it by adding a key from an old set of Northumbrian pipes to give a high b. The actual pitch of the chanter is the key of B on the piano. The drones were made from hickory shunting poles given to me by Jimmy Wilson a piper in Hamilton.

  • @bravygravy This is a possibility, but this weakens the lower notes, that is why he uses a key there, what you can't see here because of the bad video quality.

Anyway: Great Piping! Thanks for sharing it.

  • I asked the Pipemaker ("Nigel Richards" from "Garvie Bagpipes") and he said, that he made this set for Gordon with a left hand thumb key for the high B. ;)

You can get keys for Notes up and downwards the normal scale and there are no overblewn notes there.

  • The thumb is off . That and a little extra pressure will bring the higher notes out. Reed set-up is crucial.

  • 2:16 he's reaching a high B with the fingerings of a low A, how is it possible ?

    The music is wonderful

  • The chanter sounds concert pitch Bb. He's using the full capability of the chanter and getting notes in the next octave.

  • My Dad says: "It doesn't matter, just listen to the music. This is bagpipe music. There are just drones. That's the answer."

  • Probably in A. Gordon is one of the most expressive pipers there is, and this is his own composition. Written some damn good books as well, true supporter of the Border Music.

Needless to say I reckon he has been the biggest influence on my playing....
