@eqgilethan They call it alt country because alt rock started as a return to authentic and creative ideas in rock music. bands like son volt did something similar by mixing authentic country and folk with creative ideas and making it new again.

@evilrob58 Exactly! I say the same thing all the time.

@4416johnny I see your point, but 'Western' music to me is more along the lines of Marty Robbins. Actually in my opinion 'Western' music (which I love) died with Marty Robbins, so there is no true Western since him. That being said... someone PLEASE prove me wrong and post a good recent Western song!

This is country before we knew it.

@75Chainsaw Please take no tone of sarchasm from that.

@eqgilethan That's a great point. I always hated country. I guess the label Alt-country made it OK for me to like Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Son Volt, and to lesser extent Social Distortion, Camper van Beethoven, The Reverend Horton Heat, Cracker etc. Thank you for pointing out that its really only the pop bastardization of true country that one should consider hanging oneself for enjoying. I shall sleep soundly

Love the lyrics. Metaphysical.

I came here from Kasey Chambers Cover of this song... and I actually like this equally well as equal as I can.... usually I just LOVE Kasey's singing and listening to the original artist drives me insane haha.... but this guy he's got a good voice and there's a twang of some sort that sounds REALLY familiar like some other artist that I can't remember whatsoever LOL. But yeah I'm going to have to check out the other songs! Hopefully I've gotten a new favourite artist!

I don't believe this is "country" music...I would refer to it as "western," distinct from country. Country seems to have identified itself with some postmodern movement which is more of a corporate identity or brand. "Western" has kept its focus on a reality...it's more objective and identifies with the subject matter, or flow of composition. In the end, western is still the horse, while country people are riding the train.
What is honestly disturbing to me is this is now called "alternative" country... It's called this because it's 'diverges' from the mainstream pop country of today. This is "Classic" country! My undying gratitude to this band for keeping a tradition that so many others had thrown away, alive!

If you say you don't like country music then stop listening to the shit on the radio and start listening to stuff like Son Volt, Wilco, Jayhawks....tons of great stuff out there..real music for real people.
