he does comment on a point of contention that is in play between radicals and non-radicals and therefore one that requires strong articulation on both sides. until the idea of worldwide consciousness is agreed on and implemented, it arguably does not exist and the majority remains by default in a more naturalistic self-rational self-preservation. it is not incorrect to say, as bigdoglttledog says, that the idea is incongruous with economics (a self-ration based system of analysis)
this seems to be part of his point, that regions and groups tend to very suddenly assert 'time-honored keyholder' status in times when it is politically or psychologically feasible to argue such grounds.
one thing about fundamentalism that he isn't correct on is that islam is harmless before the taliban - it has a rich and diverse history of issuing and carrying out death threats as the enforcing arm of conservative censorship. look at India for all the evidence you need. pre and post Partition
the contradiction in complacent professors is they only ever speak of hitchcock, they fully accept or are unconscious of their position as luxury objects. They are consumers of their own time and expertise. At the same time, entertainment is not a sin and so he is justified to spend time in studying entertainment culture and art theory, he pays his due by getting as close as he can to useful issues as well. A small and incorrect contradiction is a straw man to the actual theses presented.
as heidegger pointed out in his critique of neitzsche a mere inversion of platonism is still a form of platonism-the real issue is how to move beyond it. this form of innocent contradiction hides a deeper aporia for the tension between theory and praxis not resolved by the latest versions of left theory. both zizek and badiou have infact resorted to variants messianic christianity as a route out of this perennial issue for radical left politics
I agree he's not as detailed as David Harvey for instance, the key i guess is in digesting Zizek's metaphorical statements. He is providing the emotional structure and expressing the contradictory-ness of thought that we experience when trying to envision a painless and legitimate cutting of the balls for instance. I don't agree he's messianic since his writing and speech does deal directly with a very necessary question: how to take account of group-emotion and group-volatility good and bad.
