Three legged tortoise gets a wheel to replace leg

Winky the three legged Mediterranean tortoise has had a new specially designed wheel and suspension system fitted to her shell. Her new wheel allows her to go off-road on boggy areas of her enclosure at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, England.

The tortoise was given to Longleat in 2002 after her lack of manoeuvrability led to a decline in health. On arrival she was given a plastic wheel but it wore out and buckled over time as she tried to access rougher parts of her enclosure.

"She actually flies about now. It's given her more ground clearance. She's now got off road wheels so she can go anywhere," said Simon England who supplied the wheel.
