This video gives a very good illustration in how to install the car seat and locking clip. I was given an old car seat to install and there were no instructions in car seat manual or my car manual on how to install the locking clip. Was able to install the car seat pretty tight with almost no slack at all.

If you pull the belt tight enough initially, you won't be able to re-buckle after adding the clip because there won't be any slack in the seatbelt. This is a very poor design flaw.

I can guarantee that I could pull the seat installed in the video way more than 1" side-to-side.
