Iraqi Girl Aborts Suicide Attack

In Iraq, a teenage girl supposedly destined to blow herself up, decides to live instead. Let's have a look.

STORY:
This was the moment a girl possibly as young as 13 decided she did not want to end her life as a suicide bomber. Handout video shows her bound to a metal structure near an Iraqi police checkpoint where she was supposed to blow herself up. She was wearing a vest packed with explosives.

Instead she told police she did not want to go through with it.

The officers have to painstakingly remove the deadly vest before they can detain her. She was later identified as Raniya Ibrahim. She's told police she is 17 years old but the U.S. military says she is four years younger.

The teenager says a woman she did not know approached her with the explosives-packed vest and helped her to put it on.

It's unclear whether Ibrahim volunteered for what was meant to be the final task of her life or whether she was forced into it.

Suicide attacks by women have become increasingly common in Iraq this year.

U.S. forces say Sunni Arab al Qaeda militants favor female bombers because police are reluctant to search women. A U.S. military spokesman says Raniya Ibrahim's decision to live indicates a continuing change of attitude among Iraqis to al Qaeda and its methods.
