Billboard Father Nguyen Van Ly installed in Freeway 880 at exit Brokaw Rd., San Jose, California on Jan. 28-2008 http://tdngonluan.com speaks volumes about what the VietnameseAmerican community in America has long fought to condemn human rights violations in Vietnam: A plainclothes Vietnamese communist guard muzzles religious leader Father Nguyen Van Ly as he speaks out against Vietnam's Communist Party during a government kangaroo trial "people's court" on March 30-2007. Father Ly, a former "prisoner of conscience" and human rights activist who spent 14 years in prison, was arrested in a government sweep of dissidents earlier this year because he was deemed "a national security threat" according to state-controlled media. It's an evocative, iconic image widely circulated via the Internet. Now a local billboard campaign by a San Jose-based Vietnamese human rights group is using the photo to help raise awareness about human and religious rights violations in Vietnam today. It has been more than 15 Billboard Father Nguyen Van Ly (Vietnam Today) installed across the Unites States.
