Gregorio Allegri: Miserere Mei Deus, 1638, based upon Psalm 51 (complete and unabridged video). Patrick Husson, 1st soprano, echo choir. This is the only recording that I have heard where the high, solo phrase is sung in one breath as a castrato could, their being known to have had far greater breath capacity than even most adult men, let alone a boy soprano.
Colmar Boys Choir School, Alsace (with adult males.) It is reported that this composition was so highly regarded by the Vatican that no copies of the score were permitted to be given to anyone else; however, in 1769, W.A. Mozart heard this twice at age 12 at the Vatican and wrote down the work from memory, thereby permitting the rest of the world to enjoy this exquisite musical experience.)

  • I am a counter tenor also and yes our voice is a natural gift I feel that many guys especially tenors are jealous of the range we get. Especially in a sweet tambre. The have to scream at the top of their voices.

  • @MrMarcvus I agree with you, also regarding tenors "screaming." I listened to every YT video of the Italian Aria from Rosenkavalier. To my ears, almost all were screaming except Jonas Kaufmann, who is accused of sounding like a baritone, and Pavarotti, who (although perhaps the best I heard) sounded on the edge of screaming. The purity of Husson's voice amazes me.

  • That's a boy soprano right? And not an adult male soprano?

    Its amazing regardless. :)

  • @cabbalistic This is an adult male singing the solo soprano line. I recently heard a British, world-famous choir sing the Miserere in my city. A boy soprano attempted to sing the same line; however, he took THREE to FIVE breaths to do the same thing. I spoke to the boy afterwords. He obviously was not satisfied with his performance; and I, although sympathetic, was not satisfied either.

  • This is absolutely (perdon the pun) divine...

  • @MrMarcvus

    so humble...

  • A beautiful rendition of a favorite setting, with the elusive high note hit so well. Combined with Alsace. Such appealing connotations! La route du vin, Colmar, where if I'm not mistaken, Matthias Gruenewald's great painting of the Resurrection resides, Mulhouse, where our French Lutheran pastor serves, etc.

  • @KanetsidohiKanotoush Yes, it is called a cappella.

  • Excuse my ignorance, in this piece there are no musical instruments, right? only voices.

  • The music is calming, very pleasant. Հիասքանչ է:
