What the photographer is to the painter is what the modern producer is to the instrumentalist. [1:25]

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money. The film traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than 30 years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a "borrowed melody" became a "copyright infringement."

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS premieres in January 2009 on Independent Lens, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, Independent Lens is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide.

  • No sampler is claiming that they made all the sounds in their work, what they do is manipulate them into something different. It isn't easy, it requires far more originality and creativity than a lot of rocknroll for example which just uses the same freaking chord progressions. No-one has to pay fender to use the notes they play on a fender guitar.

  • I will be "sampling" this DVD off PirateBay when it comes out. Or will I ?

  • @hunterman:

I think he didn´t made the right point, there´s no sense in comparin turntables with a guitar, coz the possibilities of makin music are way to different between them..

  • I will be buying the DVD on the 27th of January.

  • This needs to be seen.

  • Tabla

  • Super true :)

  • The last quote is inaccurate. A turntable with various effects vs. a guitar with various effects? I think the guitar could do even better.
