Here is the latest from Metasonix, the D-1000 vacuum tube drum machine. It is the first vacuum tube drum machine since the Wurlitzer Sideman was introduced 51 years ago in 1959.

  • great sounding but way too expensive- brian eno did the best sounds for u2 's achting baby with a 30$ radioshack speaker and a shoebox- i think all the new analog minded stuff is great but things like the moog voyager and this are just way out of reach for new musicians especially in this economy- guess ill just run my cheap rolands and korgs through guitar amps and efx units as ive always done and have people ask what synth is that? dave smiths mopho is an example of quality stuff for cheap!

  • @salvadory I agree with nearly everything you said. Creativity goes a very long way. If you have talent, you can make anything sound good, and vice versa. As far as the D-1000 and Voyager being expensive, it's a matter of perspective. If you make a living in music and can see that a device will benefit you, the price is not a huge concern. Both the D-1000 and Voyager are expensive to produce. Dave Smith products are a bargain and are a superb choice for anyone on a budget. Roger @ BCM

  • @deadbirdsings I don't think there's really a binary between economy and luxury anymore either. There's a lot of different price points that tend to be filled gear-wise, but often gets missed out. There are some examples of it being filled though - for example the Korg Monotrons are very cheap analogue devices(comparatively).

  • @salvadory - You won't use software synths, uh? You're one of those people who insists on eating caviar rather than fish sticks and then complains about how expensive it is. If you don't like the cost of caviar, then don't eat it! 40 years ago, analogue gear was all there was and musicians didn't have a choice but to buy it. Today, musicians on tight budgets have a choice, and analogue is a luxury. Those who use luxury gear shouldn't gripe too much about the price.

  • To those who say price should be based on the cost of parts: If you feel that way, why not go out and buy a blank PCB, tubes, sockets, pots, knobs, a transformer, chassis, etc, and build one yourself? I'll tell you why: it's because you lack the skills, expertise, dedication, tools, test equipment, and so on that it would take. You're not paying $1300 for a mere collection of parts; you're also rewarding the guy who took the time to put them together into something that works and sounds good.

  • @deadbirdsings ps i dont know now doepers are selling used for around 500-550- thats only 50 less then what they are new - i think the dark energy will become like a ms20 or arp in the future- it is the business- i love mine from the sound but especially to the build and looks of it- same with critter pocket piano- its cool as hell! ive got to go - lets say we just diagree on some things but the dark energy is the olive branch

  • @deadbirdsings yes a doepfer for 600 is a great deal- i just mentioned i got it for even cheaper 250 a steal- 600 for an all analogue synth with midi- with real metal wood ends well made switches and buttons and great sound- doepfer is a company that got it right- t i think the dark energy is exactly what im talking about- in fact i made a custom synth out of it with a midi controller- looks cool as hell and the total cost was around 400

  • @deadbirdsings the korg ms20 is a pefect example- i got mine in seattle pawn shop for 250-300- not sure exactly - no they go for 2000$ that is good for me but i feel sorry for people having to pay that much-korg could make a re-creation- not a vst like they have but a real analog version much like moog-sure it would be cheaper and sell well! the demand is there - moog responded- its the slim phatty thats keeping them afloat- a voyager used is less then 2000 now and dropping fast

  • @salvadory - What experience do you have with the manufacturing of analogue synth gear that would qualify you to evaluate whether it's priced reasonably or not? I'm sure that if a Jaguar was the same price as a Toyota, more people would be driving Jaguars; but then the incentive to buy a Jaguar would be lost. Do you honestly consider something like a Doepfer synth to be unreasonably priced? I personally think a Doepfer is a bargain; though it won't have the resale value of a Moog.

  • @deadbirdsings yeah - some idiot paid an infalted stupid price then had to sell it for a realistic price-usually after they realize it wasnt worth it to begin with! what you call a bottomfeeder is what i call being smart and not buying into the price hype! you sound like someone who blindly buys things without thinking beforehand

  • Hey, make that *some* things cost less used than they do new. A lot of old analogue gear has retained its value remarkably well.

  • @deadbirdsings by the way i do make my own gear- i alter and make my own unique synths and make custom wood and metal enclosures myself- my stuff looks amazing and its done for well below what it would be if manufacturers did it- DYI and analog forever!
