A one-hit wonder from a group called Rednex, this is another song from the repertoire of Burl Ives. It is a lively song, but the subject is not so. It comes from the days of slavery when a white man could own coloured slaves. In this case, Cotton-eyed Joe was a slave bought for entertainment purposes as a dancer. It appears though that he was too much of an attraction for the womenfolk and appears to have suffered badly at the hands of his owner.
