My son and I caught this praying mantis in our backyard here in Colorado in the month of October. We decided to keep it for a few days to watch how it ate bugs. During the time we had it, it ate one squash bug and two moths. The unusual thing about it was that this all green mantis had a brownish color all over its abdomen which got bigger and darker over a three day period. Then last night we found the praying mantis at the bottom of the bug enclosure with its abdomen popped open. No fluid came out and it seemed brittle although the mantis was still alive since its front legs still moved. Then my son noticed a wierd meal worm looking thing crawling on the floor of the bug enclosure. Today I dumped out the contents of the enclosure and found six of these little creatures! We looked this up on the internet and cannot find out what parasite these white worms could be. Can anyone identify them for us? Thanks!

  • they look like ordinary house fly maggets

  • this happens when an insect or animal eats a parasite infested thing the parasites can take over the brain and all the other organs (thats why its brownish) so that praying mantis is dead and the parasites will be eaten by another thing, and so on. ;)

  • waxworms the look like to me :) give um to a bearded dragon there like treats to them

  • DAMN NATURE U SCARY.. lol

no in alll reality it probably ate a fly or moth or squashbug with eggsand the eggs hatched inside the praying mantis feeding on its flesh from the inside out killing it

  • @CaptainPie5 kkkkkkkkkkk lol yea if you say

  • they did in fact eat her from the inside out. You have to be careful what you feed to them. Next time, if there is a next time, and I'm not trying to be mean here, you might want to research what to feed them. Moths, ants, house flies, fruit flies and even meal worms are appropriate to feed to them. I don't know what you fed her, but if you can recall, we can figure this out.

  • A parasite was fed to her! That's a female!

  • @favelento3 akhunamatata. its a wonderful phrase.

  • According to some people they were implanted by a botfly into the praying mantis, so you should have killed them to make the botfly mother's efforts worthless muahahahahahahahahahaha btw this praying mantis wasn't fast enough and probably went through an awfull amount of pain she or he got eaten from inside out just picture that happening to you muhahahahahahahahaha............... peace out
