It is with much regret and sadness that I make this post after much thought and even more denial but I believe it is due.
During the summer of 2008, after being horseless for 8 years, my boyfriend and I decided to purchased the OTTB mare by the name of Pinkie Dare, affectionately referred to as Pink and for two shows at Talbot Run, All of Joe's Money.
Pink was born in NY and did most of her racing at the Finger Lakes track before she was sold into Maryland and continued to race for a short time. I was lucky enough to find her, months after she was retired from racing, at the age of 6.
My first trip with Pink was to a Pipe Opener at Full Moon Farm where the staff was helpful enough to walk her into the water hazard - she wasn't quite sure what to make of that. She spent a few afternoons practicing over fences under the roof of the Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue indoor arena, trying to get over the fear of strange objects under poles. Pink worked her way up from being an 18 jumper at Bascule farm, to clearing an easy 3' at Talbot Run and I can only imagine where she would have gone from there. She knew when to be a challenging ride for me, an entertaining (and potentially terrifying) show for a crowd and a gentle coach for a few young students who had the courage to trust her. At 16.3 hands, Pink was all heart; she was an ambassador to the world for Off-Track-Thoroughbreds - at least in my small world.
On Dec 5, 2009, Pink was put down due to an unfortunate set of circumstances. She left this world quietly in the arms of two people who loved her very much - as more than just a horse, but as a friend.
As people who had known and loved her, or who may have helped with her training or who had only seen her in passing - she was a beautiful mare and hard to miss.
Though I only owned her for a year, she left an impression in my life that will not be filled any time soon. And as the story usually goes, I know I'll compare every horse I ride to her for a very long time.
Thank you so much for making my one year with Pinkie Dare so full of treasured memories.
For her sake I hope there are no speed limits in horse heaven - and no water hazards.
