When You're Smiling/Don't Worry 'Bout Me. Part Five of lost Australian performance of Dave Brubeck Quartet hosted by Digby Wolfe and featuring vocals from Laurie Loman.

The film was saved from destruction in 1984 and now is with the Australian National Film and Sound Archive.

A 1" PAL telecine transfer of the film was sent to Dave Brubeck's management in the mid 90s.

  • Yeah, I don't think Ms. Loman's performance ...ahem... quite makes it up to the level of the quartet. But hey... she's doing it live, with no electronic tricks, no foldback, and probably 12 feet in front of the group. Perhaps in context, one should cut her a bit of slack. I don't think any of today's "singing" starlets could do what Laurie's doing here. I guess you have to take the good with the bad. You win some. You lose many. At least it's live and real and Laurie's giving it her best shot.

  • Back in the early sixties the "classic quartet" was at the top of their game. I like Desmond's break. Laurie's performance works well here.

  • Well, when you are singing, it is the accompanying part who should follow the singer, not the other way around. So, if there is any decoupling, it would be on Dave's account.

  • This Craven special is amazing.

  • The camera work on this little series is pretty cool...just like the music. How about that pull back at about 1:30? Compared with the conservative style of American music shows of the time, Digby's Craven Filter series if downright bohemian. I really like the shot from Show #4 of Paul's saxophone framing Dave, digging on Paul's playing, in the background, .

  • I agree with the earlier post. As a concert producer, I know how no monitors and space can affect singers. But Laurie is so far ahead of the beat in song #1 that she obviously has little ear, plus she's totally flat at the start of song #2. On the other hand, perhaps she was a good cook who made a mean Blue Rondo Stew!

  • The introduction and coda are an incidental music, does anyone know what it is?

  • Laurie and I were friends for a short time in 1956 or 1957 when she was singing at the Pearl City Tavern on Oahu. At the time I was an enlisted man in the US Navy stationed at Barbers Point. We both were friends with the zany lip-sync guys, Pantomaniacs, appearing also.

Unlike so many entertainers, she was warm and sincere.

My daughter's name is Laurie, though i must admit my wife just liked the name.

  • grazie per aver messo in rete questi eccezionali filmati :)

  • I´m really interested in Laurie Loman. I must confess that I didn´t know anything about her. Her performance is not so bad... Could someone tell me about her biography?
