Gwyn Ashton (born 1961 in Wales) is a blues and rock guitarist. He spent most of his life in Australia but now lives in England. He has performed as opening act for Rory Gallagher, B. B. King, Van Morrison, Jeff Healey and Status Quo, among others.
"(Gwyn Ashton) blends the essences of Mississippi, New Orleans and Texas blues, 60s surf, British 70s rock and no-holds-barred Australian kick-ass boogie ... (He is) guaranteed to satisfy the most discriminating taste in guitar-led blues." (Review of his album "Prohibition" at CD Baby)
"Prohibition is a strong, powerful and dark, energetic and charged with electricity Blues-Rock ... probably the best Blues/Rock album of 2006" (Review at Bluescat)
In 2001, French Guitar Part Magazine voted Gwyn Ashton third best guitarist of the year, bested only by Jeff Beck and Gary Moore.
In 2007, his album "Prohibiton" was voted Album of the Year by the British Guitar and Bass magazine.

Known for his aggressive, no-holds-barred electric guitar playing, Australian rock-blues axeman Ashton is performing a series of solo shows promoting his latest album Prohibition in stripped-down singer-songwriter format. This intimate environment lends itself perfectly to Ashtons unique blend of hard-edged blues, Eastern tonalities and contemporary, funky chill-out grooves and rhythms, performed on his treasured 1936 National resonator, 12 and 6-string acoustic guitars, lap slide, harmonica and stomp box.
Prohibition also features Chris Glen, Ted McKenna (Sensational Alex Harvey Band, MSG, Rory Gallagher, Greg Lake) and Don Airey (Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple).
Welsh-born Gwyn Ashton migrated to Adelaide, Australia, in the 60s, picked up a guitar at 12 and, from the age of 16, played every seedy bar, festival and biker show imaginable. After moving to Sydney in the 80s, he briefly joined Aussie stalwarts Swanee and Stevie Wright. With his own band, Ashton carved up stages nationwide (some of them in the middle of nowhere, fronted with chicken wire!), sometimes driving for days through the outback to get to the next show.
In the 90s he played and recorded with Jim Keays (Masters Apprentices), sharing stages with Junior Wells, Rory Gallagher, Steve Morse and Albert Lee, and recorded his first two albums in Melbourne.
Ashtons band opened for UK rock icons Status Quo on their 15-date British arena tour in 99, promoting Ashton's then current album Feel The Heat.
Rory Gallaghers rhythm section, Gerry McAvoy and Brendan ONeill, appeared on his 2000 release Fang It! In 2001 they asked Ashton to join Band Of Friends, the memorial band to the late Irish rocker, to replace ex Thin Lizzy and Motörhead guitarist Brian Robertson. They toured Ireland, Norway, Holland, Switzerland, Germany and France.
The road in his blood, he performs relentlessly across Europe, has toured with BB King, Buddy Guy, Ray Charles, Peter Green, Robin Trower, Johnny Winter, Mick Taylor, The Yardbirds, Dr Feelgood, Pat Travers, Tony Joe White, Steve Lukather, Jeff Healey, Walter Trout (and more!) and was caught jamming onstage with Hubert Sumlin, Canned Heat and at Music Live 2006, Birmingham NEC (UK), with Derek St.Holmes and Paul Reed-Smith. He has also appeared at Popkomm '08 (broadcast by ZDF TV) and Music Live '08. Ex- Black Crowe Marc Ford sat in with Gwyn recently in Germany, on BASS!
Ashton is endorsed by: Busker Guitars, Fender (Australia), Vigier Guitars (France), Jacques Stompboxes (France), National Reso-Phonic Guitars, Seymour Duncan Pickups, Hiscox Cases, Koch Guitar Electronics, Graph-Tech Industries, Award-Session, Vintage Guitars and Dunlop Strings.
