As a "Charlie" myself, I put up with all the "Sorry Charlie" ribbing that followed the Star-Kist commercials. Considering that the commercials ran from about 1959 to 1985 or so (and ended with the death of Herschel Bernardi, who did Charlie's voice, among others), Charlie is still one of the best-known commercial characters around (his picture still appears today on Star-Kist packaging!). He may not have been a tuna that tasted good, but he made witty commercials in the best of taste!
The Charlie the Tuna commercials ran until the mid 1980's. I remember seeing them a lot...it was a popular commercial series/mascot. There's not many mascot's today for products because of the way modern-day TV viewers are. mascot's today I think would be laughed off the air; and with everyone having double-entendre thoughts, you can't say innocent phrases anymore without some people out there making sexual references about it.
Charlie wanted to be caught because the character was written to have an ego problem. Charlie felt that he was the greatest tuna in the ocean and he thought highly of himself and felt he had good taste in everything and that's why he's constantly being told that Starkist doesn't want a Tuna with good taste but they instead want Tuna that taste's good. The joke is Charlie is so stuck on himself he doesn't realize what Starkist would do if they actually accepted him.
