  • WAIT! Al Gore DIDN'T invent the interwebs? NO WAY! Anyways, I think the whole "blog" behavior might have began on the old BBS's. You were a part of that whole movement along with a lot of the rest of us old-time geeks (and yes, I consider myself an OLD TIME geek since I programmed machine code when I was 7 using hexadecimal and a punch card). I don't suppose you invented it. However I think you were one of a large group of pioneers.

  • Well the point that we can agree on is that the blog was NOT invented in 1995 the way the "experts" say it was...and that blogging was around many years before 1995. That is the thing that drives me crazy naming someone in 1995 and saying they invented the blog when I was doing it in 1982.

  • And it was not uncommon for would-be "bloggers" to frequent many BBS's with the same banter that they'd posted to their own, or at least a "home" BBS which they frequented most. I was a graphics op on several of the Portland-Metro Color 64 and Ivory BBS's, and and it was just normal to post my graphics on many of the boards around town. Could I be the inventor of syndication? LOL

  • Correct... That is sorta like if someone were to claim that REI invented the canoe or the kayak. BBS's were, by far, WAY more prolific in their day than any "blog" I've ever seen. "Banter-Log" or "Web-Log" as they've debated over the word origins has very little to do with it, as the only difference has been that they are connected to an established web presence. Back in the day when here in the NW the Bit Bucket BBS was king, they had "the" list of BBSs.

  • Maybe this 'claim' will spread at the level of urban Myth at least! If no one else is claiming inventor's status then I say it's your's by default. See if you can get it into Wiki.

  • Well, we both know you've been around for a long long time, since we were talking before the dawn of the Internet. As for who invented it, well, who can really say?

  • As far as invention the word blog... yes, I would agree that it was around the early to mid 90's when that word was official (although I don't really remember hearing much about it before 1999ish..)

I'm sure several people were doing similar things around the same time, I don't think it would be fair to place a finger (as wikipedia did) on any specific one person as an inventor however.

  • Well, I don't view a 'blog' anything other than a personal and open diary. I know there are review blogs and such but the majority of it tends to be people bitching about their daily, personal lives which they hope others may be able to relate to in some way, I'm sure. (why else would you post so much personal information aside from being bored, right?)
