ETHOS NEW MUSIC SOCIETY
Fall Student Composers Concert 2009
PROGRAM NOTES:
This short piece started out as an improvisational idea, then became larger as more ideas were added
until I had a very rough version of a violin solo. I presented the solo to a friend, whose exuberant
response inspired me to continue working on the piece until it became performance worthy. The first
three pitches that are heard in the violin solo (G, B, and F#) act as a sort of spark that created the flame
that is this piece. The theoretical and compositional aspects of this piece are basic and simple, starting
in the key of B minor and ending in G Major (with a few other key changes in between). This piece was
written to express the simple joy of writing music for musics sake.
