The rocket mass heater is running! Watch for future videos about how I plan on converting it to a pellet burner. This is going to work well to heat the aquaponic greenhouse. Currently the building is not insulated and I can raise the temperature by 25 degrees (F). Once the building is finished and I start heating the floor, it should have no problem keeping up on a really cold day.

  • I have been very impressed, not only with the project overall, but most especially with the clarity of the narration. You seem to have taken the time to address all of the "frequently asked questions" before they could be asked!

I do have one question . . . what happened to the video you did on the changes to the wood feed hole area?

  • @DamiettadCarnivalle That video is still there....perhaps it's not listed very high on the channel. Search for "azHuJFg3bFE" and it will come up. Thanks!

  • future projects?

  • @TheLegalgrow I have some good ones in the works! I want to get the dome up and running first!

  • Hi,

Two things I noticed in your design that were different from the way I learned at a rocket mass heater workshop.

No clay/perlite around the burn tube. What happens when the burn tube burns away at 1200 degrees? Also you didn't use clay/cob around your thermal battery duct work. So when the ducting rots out?

Ernie Weisner made a 12" system using 1/2 thick well casing and said it burned the steel out in a few months at over 3,000 degrees on the thermocouple.

  • @GeoDomeGuy The entire thing is an experiment so I want to be able to replace parts as needed. If I used clay, it's much harder to make adjustments. It's the reason why I used sand so I can dig it out in the future. Plus, there isn't any clay around here and I don't want to truck it in.

  • @StaticMotions Thanks for volunteering! When are you coming????

  • I am so impressed with the work you have done on your greenhouse... not only the work you've done to build it, but the work you have done to share the process, materials, construction, and challenges, through video. You are enlightening the world. We'll be featuring your full video set (for building the Geodesic Greenhouse) on GreenJoyment tomorrow, as well as linking to your Facebook and website. Super impressive and thanks SO much for being the change you wish to see in the world!

  • Hey very good video! Thank you! So basically you can burn all the junk weed all the sticks and stems and trims from your yard to warm up the greenhouse in winter... this is great! You did it right.

  • Love your videos, I need MORE ahhhhh

  • no pyromaniac haters have yet watched this video.

  • Very nice video and diagram, nice pace and easy to follow. Awesome project! The little touches you added like cleanouts, drains, and super-tall chimney are spot-on.

How's your mineral wool holding up?

If you do add clay (or water) to your sand, you may find you retain slightly more heat inside the greenhouse. It doesn't take much - maybe 10% clay. Most places you can just add dirt. Drop a line on the wood burning stove forums at permies.com if you want a longer conversation.

  • Fantastic work on the dome, heater, documentation, sharing,... everything!! Awesome!

    Thank you.

  • Great vid, great dome! My dome heats up to 15C and it's not insulated yet and no heat just the sun and it's -15C outside. Can't wait to finish it.

  • Brilliant, just brilliant. Thanks for taking the time to share your build, its truly inspirational. I don't know if I gave every vid in the series a thumbs up, but will ensure I go back and fix that now :)
