Thanks for posting this! It really helped my boys understand who our Macy went to and what the surgery entails. Small Paws Rescue is literally a lifesaver! Thank you so much for taking care of our Macy!
If you really love dogs, you would NEVER, EVER, consider buying one in a pet store (= puppy mill). NO responsible breeder would ever sell to a pet store. Small Paws rescue currently has 161 bichons up for adoption. Yes, they don't just give them away to whomever - they want to make very sure that the little fluffs find a really good, forever home.
This is the true story of the plan we implemented to bring the value of bichons from commercial kennels down to nearly nothing, meaning huge losses for the kennel owners.
Regarding "puppy mill auctions."
Go to the site and click on "why we attend auctions" Small Paws has rescued over 7000 Bichons in the past ten years. Now, the kennels can't make money from Bichons anymore, so they give the adults to us now, by the dozens.
Actually, I'd never go to a petstore, I was being sarcastic to make a point. My bad, I forgot that typing sarcasm doesn't work. Small Paws evidently goes to and supports puppy mill auctions. For every dog they buy from a mill auction, a new innoscent dog takes its place. I wonder if everyone would do better by the dogs to take a stand against the AKC and its complacency with puppy mills. Did you know that the AKC gets 80% of its revenue from mill dogs? That percentage is higher for bichons
I've been looking and looking at shelters, twice a week actually and all over the county, and had no luck finding a small-breed long-coated dog. It seems that the "breed rescues" get notified before the public does about any new arrivals and the scoop them up and want to re-adopt them out for a higher fee. Plus, the breed rescues want a very detaild, nee invasive, application and act like well-meaning pet owners like me are on a trial to get one of their dogs. Makes me think petstores instead.
