Okay, so, here's how the 'Murder Trilogy' goes:

(And for the record, Brandon didn't write this song about his own experiences! And, Mr. Brightside is NOT part of the Trilogy. For a start a trilogy can't have four parts)

- 'Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf' is the FIRST part:
He drinks himself stupid after Jenny left him ("Shakin' like the Devil when she let me go...") because of his jealousy. He can't get over the fact that she's left him and is seeing someone else. "Jennifer, tell me where I stand/and who's that other boy holdin' your hand?"

- 'Midnight Show' is the SECOND part:
He kills Jenny by suffocating her and throwing her body into the sea. "I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier of stars in atmosphere and watched her disappear into the midnight show" and "Crashing tide can't hide a guilty girl" (jealousy again).

- 'Jenny Was A Friend of Mine' is the THIRD part:
He's been caught and is defending himself by lying to the police. "There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine." He tells the police he wouldn't kill her because she was his friend so he explains with: "She couldn't scream while I held I close/I swore I'd never let her go." but in live versions he sings "She kicked and screamed while I held her throat".

That's a brief explanation of how I see it.

  • I love The Killers so much; I love all their music, and they make so many incredible songs, like Sam's Town, Mr. Brightside, and When You Were Young... but, for some reason, this song is, by far, my favorite Killers' song. Its greatness is not publicized enough!

  • I can't hear the voice, only the instrumentals.

  • Brandon's voice sounds so filled with desperation & emotion. That's what makes it

  • @few35 I realize the order I was just saying it goes into like a flash back. Like if you were watching a movie and you see the interrogation scene first and then it goes back and shows you what happens. In the other 2 it gives clear motive and flat out tells you that he killed her but in Jenny Was a Friend of Mine they leave it unresolved. If you picked up Hot Fuss for the first time and intently listend to Jenny was a Friend of Mine you would get an interrogation with no conclusion

  • @comanderstupid nope your kinda wrong it goes

Leave the bourbon on the self- he tells her that dont leave him and that he will try again but she leave with a guy

Midnight Show- he leaves the bar and goes out to kippnap her and take her to a river where he drowns and kills her

Jenny was a freind of mine- he get caught by the cops but they seem to not have enought evidece he kill her and try to preasure him unto telling them he kill her.

  • one of their catchiest

  • I love your explanation of the murder trilogy. I like to think Jenny Was a Friend of mine is first though because its the very first track in Hot Fuss and In the recorded version theres no real answer as to whether or not he did kill her. You lean to the assumption that he did but you're not completely sure. I like to think he uses that to set up the story then the other 2 become like a flash back. Thats just the way I like to imagine it though I could be wrong.
