Du bist die Ruh

Musik: Franz Peter Schubert - Opus 59, No 3, D776(1823)
Gedicht: Friedrich Rückert

Sängerin: Gundula Janowitz (Sopran, 1976)

NOTA BENE : Gundula unice mea semper est

Du bist die Ruh',
Der Friede mild,
Die Sehnsucht du
Und was sie stillt.

Ich weihe dir
Voll Lust und Schmerz
Zur Wohnung hier
Mein Aug' und Herz.

Kehr ein bei mir,
Und schließe du
Still hinter dir
Die Pforten zu.

Treib andern Schmerz
Aus dieser Brust!
Voll sei dies Herz
Von deiner Lust.

Dies Augenzelt
Von deinem Glanz
Allein erhellt,
O füll es ganz!

[Français]

Tu es le repos,
La paix clémente,
Tu es le désir,
Et ce qui le calme.

Je te consacre
Plein de joie et de peine
Pour être ta demeure
Mes yeux et mon cœur.

Retourne à moi
Et ferme
Derrière toi
La porte.

Chasse tout chagrin
De mon sein !
Que ce cœur soit plein
De ta joie.

L'abri de mes yeux,
De ton éclat
Est seulement illuminé,
Oh, emplis-le entièrement !

[English]

You are my rest,
The mild peace,
You are longing
And what stills it.

I consecrate to you
Full of pleasure and pain
As a dwelling here
My eyes and heart.

Come towards me,
And close
quietly behind you
the gates.

Drive other pain
Out of this breast
May my heart be full
With your pleasure.

The retinae of my eyes
by your radiance
alone illumined,
Oh, fill it completely!

  • Can anybodyplease explain to me what 'Augenzelt ' means. The eye-tent does not make any sense to me.

  • The word "Augenzelt" is a typical compound word(zusammengesetztes Wort) and also a lyrical, metaphorical form of eye itself by the poet.

Augenzelt means "Eye and Tent" in dictionary meaning. It is definitely eye itself, nevertheless the poet prefers to express it as "Augenzelt", a small internal universe behind the eye rids, which has a mystical tent-like space inside for the illumination of the beloved one's full radiance.

  • Augenzelt indicates;

    1. The shade inside the eye, behind the rids( a metaphor of eye as a tent shade)

    2. Eye retina inside the eye, where the radiance of beloved is illumined only on. Here the retina as well as the eye rids serve as a tent curtain(A metaphor)

    3. In French it is simpler than English. "L'abri de mes yeux", which means the shelter of my eyes, less odd then in Englsh, eye tent.

  • @kleinbittersdorf Behind the lids not rids.

  • Janowitz said, it was good to be able to sing, so as to be able to sing this lied.... here we can hear why... simply great... Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks for taking the time to explain. Since now I know the full meaning of the poem, I will certainly enjoy it more. Your English is excellent..

    Vielen dank.
